Microfinance - Transforming Lives Beyond the Client

The following was posted on the Calgary Microcredit Conference website as they are leading up to the Calgary Microcredit Conference on October 1, 2011. You can read the full article here.

When Calgarian Kim Asman visited Colombia she suspected the trip would have some impact, but she didn't expect the dramatic changes it would have on her life.

In January 2010, Kim and 9 other women traveled to Colombia to see microfinance in action. The group of professional women had formed to focus on their spiritual development and to connect with others that shared a similar desire to give back to the world. Some of the women had heard about microfinance and how it was being used as a tool for alleviating poverty, and after much consideration agreed to take part in an Insight Trip through Opportunity International, an international organization that provides a range of microfinance services and training to over 2 million people in the developing world.

According to Doris Olafsen, Executive Vice President for Opportunity International Canada, “Insight Trips provide an chance for Canadians to walk in the shoes of those who are living the life of a microentrepreneur and lets them see firsthand how empowering people brings dignity, confidence and commitment to life.”

On her 20+ Insight Trips with over 250 people, Olafsen has witnessed many transformations amongst the visiting participants, “Nearly every person comes back from their trip with, at minimum, a new view of the world and a desire to take action.”

Kim Asman was no exception. “I had expected to see hopelessness and desperation in the face of such poverty,” says Kim, “but instead I saw hope, laughter, dreams for the future and a fullness of life that is not quite present back home.”

Upon returning home, Kim said she was filled with a burning passion to do something and to change her own life. She wanted to get back to the same basic values she saw evident in many of the families in Colombia. So, in June 2010, Kim left her lucrative16-year career in the oil and gas industry. No longer did the fast-paced, high-stress world of business fit her newfound worldview.

“At first my family was shocked, but they were very supportive. My co-workers joked that I would be back to work in just a few months,” says Kim. “I had been very committed to my career for so long that it was hard for people to believe this change would last.”

Over a year later, there is no looking back for Kim. She admits she does miss parts of her previous life including the social aspect with co-workers, but the benefits she receives from spending time with her family and advocating for microfinance outweigh everything else.

Kim and the 9 other women formed a group called Amigos de Colombia – or Friends of Colombia upon their return to Canada. Their sole purpose was to raise $150,000 over three years to support a village in Colombia through microfinance. In less than 8 months the group raised $125,000 and is well ahead of their three-year target.

Through her work for Amigos de Colombia and as a member of Opportunity's Governor's Council, Kim continues to raise awareness of microfinance and work on behalf of people living in poverty. She is planning to visit Colombia again in 2012 along with her husband.

You can learn more about microfinance and how it works around the world by attending the Calgary Microcredit Conference on Saturday October 1, 2011. Tickets are $90 each (General Admission) and $45 for students and representatives from non-profit organizations. Give the Gift that Keeps on Giving

Microfinance Bucks:  These special "BUCKS" are a gift that keeps on giving.  A donation to the Amigos de Colombia Village Project allows a person, you, to recieve Microfinance Bucks in any combination of denominations in respect to your contribution.  The Microfinance Bucks look like money, and their purpose is to give them as a gift to someone from you, that in their honour you are helping to alleviate poverty in Colombia.  In their honour you are giving a gift that keeps on giving to a family, to children, to single mothers who are working their way out of poverty.  What better gift in someone's honour could there be?

How does it keep on giving?  The ripple effect is tremendous. The receiver of your Microfinance BUCKs will have a seed planted in their heart of your gift to them, and how this gift is helping an entreprenuerial poor person to receive a microfinance loan to build their business and help their family, their children, their grandparents put food on the table, afford education, afford medical and dental needs, afford clean drinking water.  But it does not end there...The entreprenuerial poor will pay back this loan and your donation will then become available in the form of another loan to another entreprenuer...and so it goes on and on and is recycled and recycled.  And still there is more...because the receiver of the Mircofinance Bucks may have it in their heart to make a donation...and their donation will also keep on giving....

Give the Gift that Keeps on Giving....and help UNDO POVERTY.   Give Microfinance Bucks to your family, nieces, nephews, coworkers, your boss, your children's teachers, piano instructors, coaches, use them for stocking stuffers.  CHANGE A PERSON'S LIFE, and CHANGE A PERSON'S HEART.

To make a donation and receive Mircofinance Bucks to distribute as a gift...please email the Amigos De Colombia.  Amigosdecolombia@gmail.com.

What motivates the Amigos De Colombia...

In January of 2010, a group of 10 Canadian women embarked upon an insight trip to Cartegena, Colombia with Opportunity International.  This was a group of passionate, inquisitive, and curious minded individuals who were keen to learn as much as they could about the world of Microfinance, and how effective it is.  They asked God to open their hearts to witness and feel the emotion that broke the heart of Jesus.  What they did not expect was the hope and faith that the clients of Opportunity International showed them.  They did not expect to witness the hope, dreams, happiness, joy, community, and love for neighbours in these poverty striken villages.  These women came home with changed hearts, having learned not only that microfinace does work, that microfinance does transform lives in developing countries, but also that microfinance could affect their own lives in the Western World for the better.

Upon returning back home, a passion built, a fire rose, and energy abounded in this group to do something, to make a difference.  They approached Opportunity International to form a committment and partnership with them to raise funds towards initiating Microfinance Opportunities to a Village in Colombia awaiting the chance for entreprenuerial microloans.

They decided to call themselves Amigos de Colombia...Friends of Colombia, and over this short time period the excitement they share with others has attracted those others to join them with their passion for this Village Project.

When asked what motivates the team, their responses are varied, personal, and individual....

    • “My motivation is to serve God and extend His love and care in a practical way by blessing people who want an opportunity to progress their lives, family and community.”
    • “I am motivated by a call in my heart to help others, God has greatly blessed my life, and I want to share my blessings and make a difference in other’s lives.
    • “I love the OI model, and I am very interested in helping other women.”
    • “The first thing that called my attention was “co-lambia” of course, and just to be able to give back to my very own people now that I have more financial opportunities to help. I want to make a difference, and show God’s love through a practical living faith.”
    • “OI ‘s work and OI’s vision. The Colombia trip. A heart for caring for women (usually the breadwinner of the family and nurturer of children.”
    • “To take my daughter to our village once it is assigned. Spanish speaking and Spanish culture. The OI model makes business sense. And I like the concept of women helping women.”
    • "To do all I can to support the team to be successful and reach this amazing goal.”

The Amigos de Colombia have committed to raising $150,000 over the next three years.  WOW.  A 5 day trip to Colombia started this...a few visits with OI clients put the seed into the hearts of these Canadians...and the passion they share with others planting these same seeds into other Canadian hearts has grown it...God is watering the seeds, and these hearts are growing.  Thank you Colombian OI Clients for YOUR DREAMS, YOUR HOPES, and YOUR ENTREPRENEURISM...for through you these Canadian hearts  have been changed and transformed, and seeds of passion have been planted.  God Bless You.
